ABOUT THE KNEE
The knee is the largest joint in the body. It is made up of the lower end of the femur (thigh bone), the tibia (shin) and the patella (kneecap) which slides into a groove on the end of the femur. Large ligaments attach to the femur and tibia to provide stability. The long thigh muscles give the knee strength. The ends of the bones are covered with a thick cushion of hard, white cartilage.
If knee cartilage is worn or damaged it causes the underlying bones to rub together producing knee pain and inflammation typical of knee arthritis.

TOTAL & PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
A knee replacement involves the removal of damaged arthritic bone at the ends of each of the femur and tibia and replacing both of these areas with a special metal material. In between both of the metals a special plastic is placed to help the new prosthesis to function optimally.
Stiffness and knee pain are common symptoms that can result in the requirement for surgical intervention but not before conservative options have been exhausted. These symptoms are often as the result of degenerative joint disease such as osteoarthritis.

KNEE ARTHROSCOPY
Knee Arthoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure performed as a day case. Small incisions are made around the knee which allows access for a camera (arthroscope) so that the surgeon can view in and around your knee.
The camera allows the surgeon to view any areas of your anatomy that may be contributing to your pain. Fluid is used to irrigate that camera and to maintain good visualisation. Images from the camera are displayed throughout on a video screen.
ACL RECONSTRUCTION
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the most important ligaments of the knee. It runs from the lower leg bone (tibia) to the thigh bone (femur) at the knee. It acts to prevent excessive forward movement of the tibia in relation to the femur and is also essential in controlling the rotation of the knee.
When the injury occurs the individual will feel sudden, sharp and severe knee pain. They may possibly hear or feel a “popping” sensation in their knee and suffer instability.
